Attendance and Punctuality

Here at St. Patrick's we strive to ensure all children are in school as much as possible.

As a parent/carer of a child on roll at our school you MUST contact our office staff either by telephone (01942 244361) or by email enquiries@admin.saintpatricks.wigan.sch.uk

to inform us of the absence of your child and the reason for this absence

as soon as you possibly can that day but no later than 9:00am.

Failure to do so you will result in a telephone call from school from 9:30am onwards.

It is our duty of care to ensure all children are accounted for each day.

If we do not get a response a home visit will take place to establish

the whereabouts of the child.

It is important for school to have current and accurate home

and mobile telephone numbers.

Please ensure school has them at the start of the academic year and please act

quickly to inform us of any changes that are made throughout the year.

What is an 'Authorised Absence'?

These are absences where there are genuine reasons for a child being absent from school. In most cases, this will be for an illness which would mean that attending school would make that illness worse or that it would be passed on to other children.

What is an 'Unauthorised Absence'?

These are absences where there is no justifiable reason as to why a

child is absent.

Mr McConnell is our school Attendance Manager and often liases with Ruth Cooper

our assigned Attendance Officer from Wigan Council.

Together they monitor attendance across the school and work tirelessly to identify why children are not in school, supporting families with children who are

persistant absentees or have unexplained absences.

On occasions this is addressed during a face to face meeting and

an Early Help agreement put in place and reviewed 4-6 weeks of the start date.

Mr McConnell and Ruth follow a 4-stage approach to monitoring attendance.

These 4 stages are:

Stage 1 (97% - 95%)
Your child’s attendance is beginning to fall below the school’s attendance target.

Mrs Barry and Ruth will closely monitor your child's attendance and, where necessary, work with you and your child in order to support you to improve it.
Stage 2 (95% - 90%)
Your child’s attendance has shown a continued decline.

Mrs Barry and Ruth will contact you (telephone call/letter) to discuss your child's attendance record.
Support from our Pastoral Team will be offered in order to assist you and your child.
Stage 3 (90% - 80%)
Your child’s attendance now falls in to the category of persistent absence.

A letter will be issued inviting you to meet with the Attendance Officer (Ruth).
Attendance targets and consequences will be discussed.
The Pastoral Team will be available to offer further support.
A Penalty Notice (or PN warning) may be issued by the Local Authority.
Stage 4 (Below 80%)
Formal intervention and referral can be actioned by the Attendance Officer (Ruth) and prosecution by the Local Authority may be considered.

Attendance Matters - Termly Updates
At the end of each term, parents will receive an ‘Attendance Matters’ update

which will provide families with details of their child’s attendance.

Children with attendance of 97% and above will also receive an ‘Attendance Matters’ certificate to celebrate their individual attendance.

If you have any questions or queries regarding your child's attendance please do not hesitate to contact Mr McConnell, who is always happy to help, during the school day.
