    and

    Liverpool Hope

Are you interested in school-based teacher training?

Do you already have a degree or due to graduate this year?

Why not apply to Wigan Catholic Primary Alliance (WCPA).

    Why train with us?

The schools of ‘Wigan Catholic Primary Alliance’ are committed to providing an outstanding Catholic education to all the pupils they serve. Wigan Catholic Primary Alliance is a large partnership of twenty-one Catholic primary schools spread across the Wigan Local Authority. WCPA is made up of a range of developing, successful and outstanding primary schools with varying contexts, all of which have a shared common goal of training high- quality teachers, with a vision for excellence.

Working in partnership with Liverpool Hope University, we are able to develop direct training that will have the academic and theoretical underpinning to allow trainees to become outstanding practitioners within the field of education.

The Catholic Church provides schools to:

    • Assist in its Mission of making Christ known to all people.
    • Assist parents in the education and religious formation of their child.
    • To be at the service of the local Church and be of service to society.

In order for Catholic schools to fulfil this Mission, they need staff of the highest calibre who know, understand and value the teachings of Christ and “have the duty and privilege to ensure that the students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine and practice”.

The training programme aims to fully equip trainees with a wide range of skills necessary for the role. This includes training in all curriculum areas and additional training on: safeguarding, SEND, EAL, Children Looked After, writing PSP’s, memory training and behaviour management. All training is evaluated by trainees and the training programme is reviewed annually using results from this feedback.

The course is a full-time, one-year training programme, structured around the school year. Trainees will be based in our schools and be regarded as a member of the team from the start.

We are seeking individuals who can demonstrate and are able to apply the skills of organisation, flexibility, reflection, evaluation and action to all aspects of the course and their career. Enthusiastic individuals who are able to communicate effectively with pupils, colleagues and parents on a range of levels are essential to our partnership.

Trainees' academic study with Liverpool Hope University is spread over the year, commencing with an initial induction day in September.

Please join us at one of our open evenings!

    Primary Course

     Primary Course (Age 5-11)

    Course Code V912

This is a full-time, one-year training programme, structured around the school year. You will be based in our schools and be regarded as a member of the team from the start.

At the start of the Autumn term, trainees will be assigned to a KS1 class within one of our schools. For the first few weeks they will spend their time working with small groups of children or team teaching, leading onto teaching whole lessons.

Alongside time on placement, trainees will follow a structured programme of pedagogical and subject knowledge training with both WCPA training and Liverpool Hope University. This allows trainees to apply and develop their new-found knowledge and skills immediately in the classroom environment. During the latter part of the autumn term trainees will undertake their first, assessed teaching practice.

The Spring and Summer terms follow a similar pattern, with  training input from WCPA/ Liverpool Hope University followed by an assessed teaching practice.

Trainees will move to a second school within the partnership for the Spring term within a KS2 setting and depending upon training needs and preferences, will either return to the original school or move to a third school for the summer term.

    (Example of course coverage)

Trainees will experience both KS1 and KS2. Trainees academic study with Liverpool Hope University is spread over the year, commencing with an initial induction day in September.

    School Placements

The programme gives trainees a minimum of 120 days in school and 59 training days, of which 12 days Academic Practice and 16 Subject Pedagogy days will be taught by Liverpool Hope University. Trainees will have a total of three placements, across a minimum of two contrasting schools.

Placements take place across key stage 1 and key stage 2 for Primary (V912).

Your professional development training will consist of 10 additional days delivered by WCPA.

You will also receive 21 days of intensive training and practice (ITaPs) on key pivotal areas of practice such as curriculum design and behaviour management, where you will engage with a range of carefully designed practical learning experiences, to accelerate your development in these areas.

Prior to starting the course, all students will complete an audit to support placement allocations. Throughout the year, the audit is amended based upon gained experience, skills, knowledge and understanding so that students are able to be placed in the most suitable school to further support their development against the teachers' standards. Our diverse partnerships highly support in offering a wide breadth of experiences.

    Other Requirements

    International Candidates

You will need the right to study in the UK.

You already have this if, for example, you:

    • are an Irish citizen.
    • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply).
    • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

    International Qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

    • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications.
    • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this).

Training with Disabilities & Other Needs

Disability or specific learning difficulty does not preclude application to study for qualifications in teaching. However, students who choose these courses are required to comply with the Fitness to Practise policies of the bodies which govern the respective professions (Department for Education). The Department for Education and Employment place a responsibility upon education and training providers to make sure that everyone who is registered as a Teacher is ‘physically and mentally fit’ to undertake the work they are training to do. Applicants are thus required to declare conditions which could be viewed as having a potential impact on their fitness to practice. Advice, guidance and support for applicants and students is available from the Education Department and also the Learning Support Team at Liverpool Hope University.

    Fees and Finance

Trainees are deemed to be students of higher education for the period of training and may receive student support (e.g. loans and bursaries) for the duration of their training.

Once accepted onto the  Training Programme, trainees should make an application for tuition fee loans through Student Finance England. The current cost of the programme is £9,535.

    Financial Support from the Government

    • You may be eligible for a student loan. These are normally for undergraduate courses but you can also apply if you do postgraduate teacher training.
    • Find out how much student loan you could be eligible for via the student finance calculator on the government website:

                            https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator

Financial Support if your a Non-UK Citizen

    • Financial support only applies to fee-paying teacher training in England (this means you pay a fee to study, instead of earning a salary while you train).
    • International candidates can expect to pay £15,250, plus living costs, to train. Fees vary between training providers. Any financial support, including a potential reduction to the home fee rate (which is set at a maximum of £9,250) is dependent on your immigration status.

    How We Select Our Trainees

    Interview Process

We have a rigorous but fair structure for the recruitment of trainees. All candidates are required to partake in a three stage interview day. Across the three stages, candidates are observed and interviewed by an experienced panel. The interview panel consists of the alliance lead and senior leaders from partnership schools on occasions a tutor from Liverpool Hope may be part of the interview panel. All tasks and interview questions are designed to allow candidates to show their potential with regards to subject knowledge, curriculum knowledge and their aptitude for teaching. Allowing us to explore your motivations for wanting to teach and your understanding of what the career involves.

Part 1: Table teach: Candidates are required to plan, adapt and resource a short lesson (around 10-15 minutes), focused around a book of their choice. They are observed during this process by the panel, who are looking at the quality of their table teach and how the candidate interacts with the children.

Part 2: Formal Interview: The questions in the interview are designed to allow the candidate to demonstrate their knowledge surrounding Primary Education. The panel are looking to see how well the candidate has researched the industry and assess their potential to teach and work with children.

Part 3: Curriculum Knowledge: In order to assess a candidate’s curriculum knowledge and to highlight future development points for the candidate, they are required to complete a maths audit and complete a short written activity based on observing another teacher's practice.

Remote interviews via Microsoft Teams or Zoom are available upon request if needed.
