Spring 2

Spring 2 in Year 1

Literacy

Throughout this term, the children in Year 1 have been focusing on the story of the Naughty Bus.  We began by exploring our box of clues and predicting what we believed our new class story was about.  We then explored the setting of our story, London, and created a Fact File about the buildings and landmarks we would find here.  We explored the use of question marks and exclamation marks, and we practised using these in speech bubbles.  We continued to use adjectives and verbs in our sentences to add more detail and we used conjunctions, such as 'and', 'because' and 'so' to extend our sentences.

Maths

This term, Year 1 have covered a range of topics including:

  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Measures
  • Number and Place Value

RE

PE

This term, the children in Year 1 have practised their working collaboratively with a partner, in our strike and field topic.  The children have used a range of small equipment, including balls, rackets and beanbags, to practise throwing and catching with a partner.  We worked on 'mirroring' our partner's movements and we worked on our listening and observation skills.

Cross-Curricular

Throughout this term, the children in Year 1 have been researching and studying the lives of three British queens in the past and present, through our topic 'Famous Queens'.  We began by exploring the work, accomplishments and lives of Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.  We looked at how the lives of these monarchs changed history and how their decisions still make a difference in our lives.  We also looked at the lives of ordinary people who lived during the reign of these queens.

E-Safety

This term, the children in Year 1 have been thinking about the importance of keeping safe online and when using technology.  We have been learning about our school's SMART rules and we have been thinking about the personal information that should not be shared online.  We also practised sending and receiving emails through our safe email application on Purple Mash.

Music

During this term's Music Day, our focus has been In the Groove.  As part of this topic, we explored the genre of Latin music and practised using our bodies and instruments such as the glockenspiel to keep a steady beat in time with the music.

Computing

Throughout this term, the children in Year 1 have been focussing on the topics 'Maze Explorers' and 'Animated Stories'.  We learned how to program an online toy using the Purple Mash application 2Go.  We practised using direction keys and creating a set of instructions to make the toy move.  We also practised debugging a set of instructions.
