As this is a Catholic School, Religious Education at Saint Patrick's is provided in accordance with recommendations from the Archdiocese of Liverpool. We follow the programme 'Come and See' throughout the school. The programme is developed through three themes - Church, Sacrament, Christian living.
In Year 3 the topics we study are:
- Homes (God’s dream for every family)
- Promises (Promises made at Baptism)
- Visitors (Advent; waiting for the coming of Jesus)
- Journeys (Christian families journey with Jesus)
- Listening and sharing (Jesus gives himself to us in a special way)
- Giving all (Lent; a time to remember Jesus’ total giving)
- Energy (Gifts of the Holy spirit)
- Choices (The importance of examination of conscience sacrament of reconciliation)
- Special places (Holy places for Jesus and the Christian family)
HOMES
We began this topic by asking and responding to questions about our own homes before thinking about what makes a house a home, comparing our ideas and experiences with those of others. During the topic we:
- explored some of Paul’s letters to the early Christians and were able to retell some of the advice he gave about living together as a family.
- retold some things about the life of the Holy Family and thought about the example they set.
- were able to describe some ways in which Christians live as a people chosen by God and began to give reasons why Christians should try to love others.
- learnt about Jesus’ new rule
PROMISES
We began this topic by asking and responding to questions about promises. We thought about why people made promises and made links between actions and promises made.
During the topic we:
- retold the story of the Baptism of Jesus
- described and gave some reasons for the actions and symbols used in Baptism
- gave some reasons how and why Christians live as followers of the Light of Christ.
VISITORS
We began this topic by asking and responding to questions about our experiences and feelings about visitors, thinking about how we prepare for and receive visitors.
During the topic we:
- retold the stories of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus
- thought about links between some of the stories explored and Advent as the season for getting ready for the coming of Jesus
- described how Christians use the time of Advent to reflect on their lives in preparation for the coming of Jesus.
- thought about reasons for some to the religious actions of Christians during Advent / Christmas to prepare for the coming of Jesus.
Journeys
We began this topic by asking and responding to questions about our experiences and feelings about the events which mark the year or season, comparing our ideas and experiences with those of others.
During the topic we:
- retold some stories of the Mysteries of the Rosary / special feasts of the year
- described the liturgical year and how it is composed of seasons and feast days
- described how some prayer leads to good actions
- began to make links between some scripture and what Christians believe
- began to give reasons why Catholics celebrate certain feasts of the year and why certain actions and symbols are used.
Listening and Sharing
We began this topic by asking and responding to questions about our experiences and feelings about listening well and sharing, comparing our ideas and experiences with those of others.
During the topic we:
- described the actions and symbols used during the celebration of the Eucharist
- began to give reasons for specific actions and words used during the celebration of the Eucharist
- described some ways in which Christians share God’s love with others
- began to give reasons why Christians want to share the Good News of Jesus.
