Design and Technology

At Saint Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, we use the PlanBee Scheme to support our teaching of Design and Technology. This year, we will study the following topics: 'Resistant and flexible materials', 'Cookery' and 'Textiles'.

In each topic, we are assigned a challenging task. We then consider what we need to create before looking at example products already available and conducting market research. Following this, we use our gathered research to design, edit and evaluate a finished piece.

We will make a suspension bridge to meet our brief of easing traffic issues in the local area. In our Textiles topic, we will design and create a phone case as a gift to somebody special.

Textiles: A Phone Case for a special person

We recently designed a phone case for a special person. Firstly, we conducted some market research to examine different stitches and materials. Then, we designed and reasoned our own creations; making notes of stitches and product suitability. We then practised a range of sewing skills (including straight, whip, back and basting stitch) to complete our final piece. Throughout the design process, and at its conclusion, we evaluated against both design criteria and suitability for the user.
